Oficina de One Acre Fund en ZombaDespués de 18 horas de viaje finalmente llegué a la ciudad de Zomba en Malawi y reconozco que ha sido una mezcla de sentimientos. Por un lado está la emoción por lo nuevo, lo que hay por descubrir, y por el otro la melancolía de estar lejos de todo y de todos. La vida aquí es muy diferente -o al menos eso parece a primera vista.
Ayer apenas llegué fui a la oficina a recoger la llave de la casa y luego al supermercado para hacer la primera compra ya que tenía que pasar la primera noche sólo (el compañero con quien vivo estaba de viaje y regresó hoy). Hasta ahi fue todo muy bien.
Supermercado en ZombaMe hubiera quedado horas recorriendo cada centímetro del super, viendo cada producto, leyendo cada etiqueta. Es verdad que hay marcas y productos que reconocía pero también muchos más que no. O que simplemente eran parecidos pero locales y todo tiene su encanto. Pero al llegar a la casa, una casa grande y tan grande como vacía, tuve esa sensación de estar muy lejos. Debido al ánimo que tenía, mi primera cena no fue nada sofisticada: una sopa de fideos chinos a la que solo hay que agregarle agua hirviendo.
Hoy a la mañana desarmé la valija y luego fui a la oficina. Y eso me ayudó. Empezar a conocer a mis nuevos compañeros, hacer las primeras preguntas (cual es el horarios de trabajo, donde hacen las compras, cuales son las comidas típicas, que frutas y verduras hay…). Hoy fue un día de presentaciones y muy tranquilo.
Salón en la casa nuevaLa casa donde vivo (ver foto principal arriba) está a las afueras de la ciudad, más específicamente arriba en la ladera de una meseta. O sea que en plena oscuridad de la noche (si, oscuridad total porque no hay alumbrado en las calles) puedo ver a lo lejos las luces de Zomba. Durante el día también hay una vista agradable de otras sierras que hay cerca.
Aún no me han dicho cual va a ser mi función durante estos primeros meses. Sólo se que mañana a las 8:00 nos esperan en el depósito de la ONG porque llega una carga de semillas y vamos a tener una reunión con parte del equipo ahi mismo. ¿De qué se tratará?.-

One Acre Fund office in ZombaAfter traveling for 18 hours I arrived in Zomba city, Malawi, and so far it has been a true mix of feelings. On one side, there’s the excitement about the unseen, what is to be revealed; but on the other side, there’s nostalgia for being far away from everything and everyone. Life here is very different -at least that is what it seems at first sight.
Yesterday upon arrival I went directly to the office to pick up the house keys and from there to the supermarket. I needed to do my groceries given that the colleague that I live with would not arrive until today. So far so good. I would have stayed hours at the supermarket walking down every aisle, checking each item and reading every label.
Supermarket in ZombaI have to admit that there are products and brands that I recognise but it’s also true that there are several more which I don’t. Besides, everything has a local touch which makes it even more charming. But when I arrived home, a large and spacious house, it felt so empty. And I felt so far away. Since I was not in my happiest mood my first dinner was not anything special: a Chinese noodle soup. Yes, those ones that you only have to pour boiling water. From there to bed.
This morning I unpacked my suitcases and then I visited the offices. That helped. I started getting to know some of my new colleagues, asking the first -and basic- questions (what the work schedule is, where to do my groceries, which are the typical meals,…). Today was a relaxed introduction day.
Living room in my new houseThe house where I live (in the top main photo) is located just outside of town. To be more precise, it’s up on the hill of the plateau. That means that in the middle of the dark night (yes, full darkness as there is no public lightning in the streets) I can see the town lights. During daytime there’s also a pretty view of other mountains located nearby.
I haven’t been told yet what my main responsibilities will be during these first few months. All I know is that tomorrow morning we are expected at 8 am in the storage building because there’s a seed delivery and we’ll also have a meeting with part of the team there. What will it all be about?

Varios han sido los cambios de países y continentes desde tus 17 años , seguramente todos tuvieron su encanto y distintas espectativas, quizás ninguno tuvo la connotación que tiene este, pase rápido este proceso, paz en el corazón y en los pensamientos, toda puerta q se abre es para brillar , brillarás …… E inspirarás !!!! Max – Al new chapter brings anxiety and challenges. You know this already I do not need to tell you. The first days you are left to be with your self – you do not have connections with your new environment and yet these are the most challenging but beautiful times. In a couple of months you will look back and see and feel the growth – from where you are now to where you will be. This is ‘experiencing’ – this is among other things why you embarked on this journey. Always with you – and a bit jealous. I can not wait to come and visit. Your friend Edson!

Buen día Nieto, sábado 3 de octubre con helada – 4.2 de mínima, la primavera todavía ausente, e estado leyendo en Wilkipedia sobre Zomba, y también entre en la pagina de One Acre Fund y estuve leyendo y viendo la tarea y la gente que esta en la ONG, ardua tarea, que ya comentaras, buen fin de semana, con esta frase, La distancia impide un beso o un abrazo, pero jamás impide un sentimiento.
La vi, me gusto, la subí a mi pagina y te la mande, vos sabes cuanto los quiero uds. fueron el motor de mi vida, lo mejor que paso, ahora Ian y Teo, completan el universo, el año que viene si Dios quiere lo llevare Ian al Jardín en bicicleta como hacia con uds. felicidades y que Dios te bendiga en este camino que emprendes, Abrazo Nieto.

Max! So proud of you! I believe if you want to move forward and change, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable: being outside your comfort zone can bring really amazing things – as already know! You will find lost of new friends there I am sure!! And if your new house feels empty, buy some art cause remember, ‘earth’ without ‘art’ is just ‘eh” 😉
