Y así pasaron dos años… dos años desde aquel día que en el aeropuerto de Madrid me subía a un avión con un nuevo destino. Tenía tantas preguntas acerca de como sería mi vida a partir de ese momento, a que retos me enfrentaría, si me sentiría cómodo, si valdría la pena todo lo que estaba dejando atrás. Hoy, dos años más tarde, he encontrado esas respuestas. Lo puedo resumir fácilmente: lo volvería a hacer sin dudarlo.

Pasaron varios meses desde mi último artículo publicado y en esta ocasión sentí las ganas de volver a escribir. Si bien ha sido uno de los mejores trabajos –y más aún, experiencias- que he tenido en mi vida, he decidido que debo priorizar mi vida personal y regresar a Europa. Afortunadamente, seguiré trabajando en One Acre Fund pero en un puesto diferente, ya más lejos del trabajo de campo, pero con el mismo entusiasmo de seguir mejorando la vida de miles de campesinos. La semana próxima tendré que hacer las valijas. Estarán muy llenas. Pero más que por mis pertenencias será por lo más valioso que me llevo conmigo: primero, la tolerancia y flexibilidad que me permiten encarar cada reto con menos frustraciones. Segundo, la apreciación de los pequeños momentos que la vida nos regala cada día. Y tercero, la generosidad de hacer algo por los demás sin esperar nada a cambio.

Atrás dejo un equipo de gente que ha crecido enormemente y que va a continuar construyendo un gran programa. El día que llegué a Zambia, cuando se iniciaba el programa, sólo tenía 4 personas en mi equipo y dábamos soporte a 400 campesinos. Hoy, luego de comenzar el tercer año de operaciones, mi equipo tiene 75 miembros y estamos listos para entregar semillas y fertilizantes a más de 7.000 campesinos. Con ellos sembrarán 8.400 hectáreas de maíz que les permitirán no sólo cubrir sus necesidades alimentarias, sino obtener una ganancia para pagar gastos escolares de sus niños y mejorar la calidad de vida.

En esta vida todo es posible, sólo hace falta imaginárselo y trabajar para hacerlo realidad. Al fin y al cabo, nuestro destino depende de cada uno de nosotros. ¿Estás listo para dar el paso?

It has been two years… two years since that day at the airport of Madrid when I got on an airplane with a new destiny. I had so many questions about how my life would be since that very moment, which challenges I would have to face, whether I would feel comfortable, whether it would be worth all I was leaving behind. Today, two years later, I have found those answers. I can summarise it in a few words: I would do it all again without any doubt.

It has been a long time since my last post and in this occasion I felt compelled to writing again. Even though this has been one of the best jobs ever –and beyond that, an incredible experience- I have decided to prioritize my personal life and return to Europe. Lucky enough, I will continue working at One Acre Fund but in a different role, farther away from the field, but with the same passion of improving small-scale farmers’ lives as before. Next week I will need to pack all my suitcases. They will definitely be full but not just with all my belongings. Rather because of all the learnings that I take along with me: firstly, the tolerance and flexibility that allow me to face each challenge with less frustrations. Secondly, the appreciation of the little moments that we encounter each day of our lives. Lastly, the generosity of doing something good for someone else without expecting anything in return.

I leave behind a tremendous team that has grown in their roles and responsibilities, who will continue building an impactful programme. The day I arrived in Zambia when the programme was just being launched I only had 4 people in my team and we were serving 400 small-scale farmers. Today, just after kicking-off the third year of operations my team has 75 staff and we are ready to deliver seeds and fertiliser to more than 7,000 farmers. They will plant 8,400 hectares of maize that will provide them not only with enough food for the whole year but also an additional income to cover school fees for their children and improve the quality of their lives.

Everything is possible in this life. First you just need to imagine it and then you need to work to make it happen. After all, our destiny depends on us.
